Imposter syndrome is a pervasive phenomenon that cripples new writers. The healthcare profession is particularly known for its sense of inadequacy. Despite their accomplishments, competence, and qualifications, writers experience self-doubt, and fear of being exposed as frauds. Healthcare workers feel like they need additional training, degrees, and other unnecessary qualifications to ever even think of becoming a writer.
The number one question I get asked by people considering writing is “what other degrees do I need besides the ones I already have”. And it’s heartbreaking to see, because healthcare workers and other professionals already have extensive schooling. To become a writer, you just need to be able to take that knowledge you have from school and your years of experience working and translate that into writing. It’s that simple.
Understanding Imposter Syndrome
People with imposter syndrome believe their successes are undeserved or the result of luck rather than merit. They’re full of self-doubt, even though they may have a track record of competence and achievement. They may feel like they don’t belong or deserve to be in the writing world. Or that editors won’t want to hear from them. These feelings can manifest as anxiety, perfectionism, procrastination, and a reluctance to actually pursue work.
Why Imposter Syndrome Affects Nurses
In the nursing profession, imposter syndrome is everywhere. We can’t possibly know everything about healthcare. There are so many different niches, and everyone’s body is slightly different. What worked for one patient may not
necessarily work for another.
We have to make quick, critical decisions in a fast-paced environment with the expectation of perfectionism. School can’t possibly teach us everything. So, we end up feeling ill-prepared and guessing ourselves every step of the way. And this is true for other healthcare workers, too, not just nurses.
The hierarchical nature of healthcare plays into imposter syndrome, too. Authority and expertise are rigidly defined. Nurses are often placed at the bottom. The phrase “just a nurse” has become our imposter syndrome battle cry. This can be worse for novel nurses who are still learning the ropes. And it certainly spills over into writing as nurses take these feelings of inadequacy and hesitancy as they approach editorial teams.
Why Imposter Syndrome Affects New Freelance Writers
New writers face the same challenges with imposter syndrome. They’re navigating a new work landscape and fine tuning a whole new set of skills. And the first few months, like with any new jobs, is tough. They’re still learning how to
find clients, how to write, and what they want to do within the writing world. Writing is vast, and it’s easy to feel like you don’t belong, even though you do.
New freelance writers have no credibility when they start out, just like new nurses. They have to build their testimonials, their portfolio, their resume, and their client base. There aren’t really formal credentials or traditional career paths in freelance writing. Writers can feel lost and unsure of their progress without any reference to check. They may question their abilities and feel insecure about their choices as a business owner.
Like nursing, it can be tough to get your first “job” (client). Some freelancers listen to their imposter syndrome and give up way too soon. They question why they aren’t getting work, and think it must be too competitive. More often than not, success is right around the corner, but they stop trying instead of pushing through.
Strategies for Overcoming Imposter Syndrome
Overcoming imposter syndrome is tough. It took me years to get used to myself in this new role. Overall, I acclimated well, but I would still have moments of “oh my gosh, I don’t belong here. I don’t have a PhD in chemistry, why would they want me?” This went away after I started to get more and more work. When I would hop on the phone with potential clients, they would react so positively to my clinical background, my terminal degree never came up.
Banishing imposter syndrome doesn’t happen overnight. It’ll be an ongoing journey that requires self-awareness and self-compassion. You should try to embrace mindset shifts to promote positive self-talk. Instead of “I can’t”, it should be “I can” or “I’ll try”.

Recognize the symptoms of imposter syndrome. Understand when you’re using negative self-talk, and perfectionism. These concepts are rooted in the fear of failure. You do not have to be perfect to be in the writing space. Remember: these thoughts are distorted, and not a reflection of yourself or your true ability.
Celebrate Achievements
Take time to celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem. I’m always making posts on LinkedIn to celebrate myself and others. If we don’t take the time to look back at what we’ve done, it’s easy to lose track of how far we’ve come. Even small moments are worthy of a celebration. By reframing your thinking and focusing on your achievements, you can boost your self-confidence in the face of imposter syndrome.
